Where Does the Color Come From?
Fancy color diamonds may be natural or treated in the laboratory to reflect color. Lab treated fancy diamonds fail to exhibit the number of properties that natural color diamonds do and it is, therefore, easy for you to distinguish between the two.
Typically, lab treated color diamonds are created by subjecting S-Z grade yellow/brown diamonds to high temperature and pressure, altering the natural properties of the stone and hence the color. However, doing so makes the stone appear more concrete, eliminating the sparkle that is typical for diamonds.
Natural fancy color diamonds get their color during the crystallization phase due to the presence of certain minerals at the site. The temperature and air pressure on the site are also of fundamental importance. The minerals alter the crystallization process, distorting the crystal lattice and absorbing a specific band of light rays. This, in turn, gives each color diamond its unique tint.
All of these factors play a pivotal role in determining the saturation of color in a loose diamond. This is one reason why there are numerous variations in fancy color diamonds too.
Chemical Causes of Different Hues
To dig deeper into this, here’s what experts and enthusiasts believe to be the reason behind the different colors of diamonds.
Brown, Red and Pink colors in diamonds appear due to the presence of high pressure and heat. This distorts the crystal lattice, enabling the diamond to absorb green light rays. This gives the diamond a pinkish tinge.
Blue and Gray diamonds appear so due to the presence of Boron in the rocks. They bond with carbon particles during the crystallization phase, hence giving it a blue color.
Green diamonds get their color as a result of exposure to radiation just as they’re being pushed out of the earth’s crust. This creates a greenish and yellowish tint in the diamond.
Purple and Black diamonds get their color as a result of crystal distortion. Some experts believe the presence of Hydrogen at the site may have something to do with it.
Orange and Yellow diamonds get their color due to the presence of Nitrogen in rocks. It distorts the crystal lattice in a way which encourages blue light absorption, hence creating such colors.
The environmental factors are highly variable, and so is the result. Fancy color diamonds may have a wide range of colors and qualities, which makes it tricky to grade them.
