Precious coral is an organic gem of waxy luster derived from the hard skeleton left behind after coral polyps die. It is most commonly a pinkish red color, though black, orange, and white have also been found. Coral can be found in its native habitat in tropical marine waters across the world. As with other hard invertebrate structures, precious coral is made of calcium carbonate.
