The word garnet is an umbrella term used to describe no fewer than 14 vitreous gems that present a range of colors. Large deposits are found across the US, as well as in Czechoslovakia and other parts of Eastern Europe. The general formula for garnet can be described as X3Y2(SiO4)3, with X and Y being any of several cations of various oxidation states.
