Lapis Lazuli is a composite stone that cannot be technically described as a mineral; rather, it is composed of several minerals that create a beautiful marbled or sparkling display. The main supplier of lapis to the rest of the world is Afghanistan, though small mining endeavors are present in Argentina, Chile, and Russia. A sample of lapis derives its blue color from lazurite, of which it must contain no less than 25% to earn its name. Gold colored flakes that are often suspended within the lazurite are pyrite, while white veins are most often calcite.
